“It’s a combination of old traditional things people would expect to see at fair coupled with new and different attractions,” said Howard M. Mosner, the fair’s president and general manager.
The newest attraction is a building that houses the 4-H Club’s poultry displays, the Department of Natural Resources exhibit and a museum dedicated to the Maryland State Fair, which dates to 1879.
But one of the biggest draws still is the food, said Stan Dabkowski, the fair’s chairman of the food pavilion.
Dabkowski, a 53-year-old from Manchester, unloaded bright red peppers, squash, eggplant and corn that was picked just two hours earlier from a nearby farm.
“One man comes back and eats eight to ten ears of corn,” he said. “You can’t find corn like that anywhere. It rolls out so fast.”
Local vendors sell a wide variety of items ranging from cleaning products to jewelry to fabrics.
“I find a lot of things to buy,” said Charlotte Ritzmann, a 69-year-old Essex resident, who added that the shopping is her favorite part of the fair. “I’ve been going all my life.”
