Charges dropped against Columbia man who testified in brother’s murder trial:
A Howard prosecutor Tuesday dropped the charges against a Columbia man who was accused of helping his brother evade police after committing two murders.

William Richardson, 24, was charged with accessory after the fact for assisting Charles Richardson, 24, also of Columbia, after he’d committed two murders, officials said.

Prosecutor Kim Oldham dropped the charges, because William Richardson had testified against his brother at trial, saying Charles admitted to killing 7-Eleven convenience store clerk, Alevtina Zhilina, during an April 2007 armed robbery on Columbia Road.

Charles Richardson also was convicted of first-degree murder for fatally shooting Trae Allen, 19, in May 2007.

Man convicted of murdering corrections officer: A Baltimore man was convicted of murdering a longtime corrections officer.

Brandon Wall, 22, pleaded guilty to the felony first-degree murder of Correctional Officer Perry Brooks.

Under the terms of the plea agreement, Wall faces a maximum sentence of up to 35 years in prison, prosecutors said.

His sentencing is scheduled for Jan. 22.

On May 25, 2007, Brooks was parking his car in the rear of the 1900 block of Hillen Road when Wall and another man tried to rob him, prosecutors said.

During the robbery, Wall fatally shot Brooks.

Investigators recovered shell casings from the scene that matched those found at the robbery scene of a Morgan State University professor a few weeks earlier, prosecutors said.

After his arrest, Wall confessed to the robbery and murder.

Suspect in baby’s death released from jail:
A suspect in the starvation death of 1-year-old Javon Thompson, who was allegedly killed by small Baltimore cult, has been released from jail.

Baltimore Circuit Judge John Howard reduced the bail for Steven Lee Bynum, 42, of Baltimore, from no bail status to released on his personal recognizance, prosecutors said.

Baltimore Assistant State’s Attorney Patty McClane argued that there was no change of circumstance and the no bail status remained in the interest of public safety, prosecutors said.

A trial is set for Jan. 28.
